From the Desk of Rabbi Yaakov Kellman, Executive Director of JERNY
Jewish Educational Resources of New York (JERNY) is pleased to announce that its Steering Committee has selected from your nominations the following three candidates as its fourth Israel Hero:
Dr. Stephen Berk
Dr. Stephen Berk is widely known for his expertise on the Middle East and the Holocaust. He currently serves as a professor of Holocaust and Jewish Studies at Union College, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1967. Steve has earned an international reputation for his teaching, writing, and research about such topics as the Holocaust, the American Jewish experience and anti-Semitism. He has extensive field experience and travel in Israel and Egypt among other countries.
Ms. Laurie Clevenson
Laurie Clevenson has been editing the Jewish World for more than 25 years, bringing the events happening in Israel to the people in the greater Capital District thereby creating a support mechanism for and greater understanding of Israel-related issues. Laurie is a sociology and literature student, film critic, wire editor, city editor, copy editor, layout editor at The Jewish World weekly newspaper. With Laurie’s leadership at the helm of the only Jewish newspaper between Monsey and Montreal, the paper helps to mold Jewish opinion in the Capital District marketplace of 852,000 people.
Ms. Josie Kivort
Josie Kivort has been the consummate Ambassador for Israel from the Capital District. A Schenectady resident, Josie has served as a role model and inspired many of her fellow Schenectady Jews to get involved in Zionist organizations. Josie is on the national board of Hadassah, a women’s Zionist organization, which Josie has been involved with for twenty five years. She is also a champion of Israel Bonds. Josie’s passion also includes a Russian resettlement program through Congregation Agudat Achim where she chairs a Russian Shabbat with prayers only in Russian and Hebrew.
While all three of these candidates are certainly worthy of being an Israel Hero, it is now up to YOU to select the individual who, in your opinion, best promotes positive connections to Israel.
